07/09/2004 Rep. Nick Smith Scolds UN on House Floor
Rep. Nick Smith (R-Addison) demanded accountability from the United Nations (UN) yesterday for misuse of funds and corruption with Iraq’s Oil-For-Food (OFF) Program. Smith presented evidence of abuse during House debate on appropriations for the United Nations. Smith, a member of the International Relations Committee, was especially concerned that the UN and countries involved with the OFF were not cooperating with the fraud investigation.

Rep. Nick Smith (R-Addison) hosted a town hall meeting today in his Jackson District Office. Smith engaged in a heated discussion touching on a variety of topics including the economy and jobs, the War in Iraq, and gay marriage. Forty people from Jackson County and the surrounding area attended the discussion and shared their views and insights.

04/02/2002 Smith Criticizes Budget Gimmickry To Evade Statutory Debt Limit
U.S. Representative Nick Smith (R-MI), former Chairman of the Speaker’s Task Force on the Debt Ceiling, released a letter today to the Speaker of the House, and Senate Majority Leader (attached) urging caution on the disinvestment of trust funds owned by government employees and retirees in order to avoid overstepping the statutory debt ceiling. The letter continued by asking these congressional leaders to reassert Congress' constitutional authority over spending and debt, which has been lost through executive branch encroachment over the last decade.
