07/27/2004 Smith Announces U.S Small Business Administration Low Interest Loan Offers to Seventh District for May Storms
Rep. Nick Smith (R-Addison) announced today that the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has declared that many counties in Michigan, including the seven counties in the Seventh Congressional District, constitute part of a disaster area due to damages caused by severe storms that occurred from May 20 to May 24. President Bush had previously taken action June 30 and signed a major disaster declaration following a review of the Federal Emergency Management Administration’s analysis of the state's request for federal relief.

11/06/2003 House Approves Smith Amendment to H.R. 1829
The House approved Congressman Nick Smith's amendment to the Federal Prison's Industries bill today. Smith (R-Addison), while serving in the Michigan State Capitol, was the Chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee for the Department of Prisons. While there he increased the work requirement for prisoners and expanded prison industries.

11/15/2002 Smith Provisions Included in Bankruptcy Bill
U.S. Rep. Nick Smith said the bill will tighten up bankruptcy laws resulting in "savings for lenders and better deals for borrowers." Two of Smith's bills, the Parental Responsibility Act and making the farm Chapter 12 bankruptcy provisions permanent were both included. The legislation reforms loose bankruptcy laws that some have used to avoid debts they can afford to pay. Ending this abuse will reduce losses to lenders and reduce interest rates for consumers.

Today U.S. Representative Nick Smith (R-MI) told his colleagues on the House Floor that the government is just as negligent as corporate America. "As we talk about corporate accountability, maybe it’s time to talk about government accountability. Let’s take this time to talk about what government is doing," Smith said. "We are not doing a good job managing their money or at being truthful to the public."
