Rep. Nick Smith (R-Addison) announced $350,000 for the Jackson County Intermediate School District to develop a math and science resource library. The math and science promotion for K-12 will be developed in conjunction with the Calhoun County Intermediate School District.

04/23/2004 Smith Math and Science Bill Passes House
The House of Representatives this week passed legislation introduced by Congressman Nick Smith (R-Addison) to recognize and encourage business and other private sector involvement in math and science education. The bill, H.R. 4030, the Congressional Medal for Outstanding Contributions in Math and Science Education Act of 2004, passed the House by a vote of 411 to 7.

Rep. Nick Smith (MI-7) announced today his nominees for the 2004 summer session and the 2004/2005 school year session of the House Republican Page Program. Students from across the 7th Congressional District submitted applications for this prestigious program. This year’s nominees for the summer session are Paul Oliver of Jonesville High School and Lauren Redding of North Adams/Jerome High School. Jeremy Gordon, home-schooled in Clinton, has been nominated for the school-year session.

10/31/2003 Smith Holds Hearing on Improving Math and Science Education
Yesterday, House Science Research Subcommittee Chair Nick Smith held a hearing on a critical program to improve American math and science education. Schoolteachers and university representatives from the Math and Science Partnership (MSP) program testified about the use of federal funds for improving K-12 math and science. The Math and Science Partnerships are a result of the National Science Foundation Authorization Act of 2002, legislation that was introduced and shepherded through Congress by Representative Smith.
10/29/2003 Smith Performs Shakespeare
It was Much Ado About Something when Congressman Nick Smith took part in a Congressional skit that included lines from Shakespeare plays King Lear, Measure for Measure, Macbeth and others. Smith wore a Shakespearean costume as he performed in a show of support for literature and education. Smith said he was encouraged to participate by his daughter Juliana Bellinger who teaches Shakespeare in High School.

12/20/2002 President Signs Nick Smith Bill to Boost Science and Math Education and Increase Basic Research
In a special signing ceremony yesterday at the White House, President Bush signed into law H.R. 4664, the National Science Foundation Authorization Act of 2002. The new law, authored by Representative Nick Smith (MI-07), expands federally funded basic research efforts at America’s colleges and universities and establishes comprehensive new math and science education reforms at the K-12 and college levels. Before signing the bill, President Bush commented on the great contributions of the National Science Foundation (NSF), noting that approximately half of the U.S. Nobel Prize laureates in science and engineering have received NSF research grants.

09/27/2002 Smith Announces Lenawee County Education Grant
U.S. Representative Nick Smith (R-MI) today announces a U.S. Department of Education Parental Information and Resources Center Grant of $697,809 to be awarded to Lenawee County ISD and the Communities in School of Lenawee County (CIS) program. With the grant, CIS will allow the Lenawee’s CHILD project to serve local children and parents by opening thirteen Parent Information Resource Centers, serving both students and parents, especially targeting low-income families in the county. The program also calls for a mobile center to travel among area migrant camps in the county serving workers and their children.
