09/16/2004 Smith Gets “Bump-Down” Approval for 7th District Ozone Standards
Rep. Nick Smith (R-Addison) announced today that two counties in the 7th Congressional District have been recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for complying with tough new air quality standards. Lenawee and Washtenaw counties have been “bumped down” from moderate to marginal non-attainment under the EPA’s new ozone standard. These areas are now subject to fewer emissions control requirements such as mandatory vehicle inspections because Michigan has committed to meeting the new ozone standards by 2007 instead of 2010.
04/17/2002 Smith Comments On Climate Change Initiatives for the 21st Century
U.S. Representative Nick Smith (R-MI), Chairman of the Science Subcommittee on Research, stressed the need for better scientific research at today’s congressional hearing on global climate change. Smith, a U.S. Congressional delegate to the COP-6 conference at The Hague in late 2000, said, "Even though there is no compelling evidence on the connection between human activity and global warming, we must expand our research efforts to better understand and respond to climate change."

09/05/2001 Jackson Brownfield Redevelopment Gets Million Dollar Grant
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has announced a $1,000,000 grant to Jackson County’s Brownfield Redevelopment Authority. The announcement designates the funds to aide Jackson Co. in the redevelopment process and serve as seed money providing capital with the fund revolving to provide resources in the future.
