Rep. Nick Smith (R-MI) today said bravo to Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan. Greenspan warned that the next generation will not receive the same level of Social Security benefits as their parents enjoyed without prompt changes to the Social Security program.

Rep. Nick Smith (R-Addison) hosted town hall meetings yesterday at the Coldwater Airport Inn and the Hudson Community Center. Smith spoke on a variety of topics including the economy and jobs, the War on Terror, Medicare and Social Security. Forty-five people from Branch and Hillsdale Counties and the surrounding area attended the discussion and shared their views and insights.

U. S. Representative Nick Smith (R-MI) testified before the House Ways and Means Committee yesterday on social security reform. Smith, who has been acknowledged as a pioneer of social security reform on Capitol Hill, has introduced four social security reform bills since coming to congress in 1993. Smith said, "We need to see that citizens are better informed on the issue. This hearing helped inform the American people that social security is at risk, and that change will be necessary. We have a choice between strengthening and updating the program with fundamental reform or continuing on the path of periodic tax hikes and benefit cuts that we’ve been on for a generation."

Rep. Nick Smith (R-Addison) today reacted to President Bush's announcement of a 16-member, bipartisan commission on Social Security. The commission will draft legislation to implement Social Security. Rep. Smith has been a pioneer on Social Security reform and introduced three bills over the last six years to restore the solvency of Social Security. He also chaired the bipartisan Budget Committee Task Force on Social Security that made 18 unanimous recommendations for reform.
