Rep. Nick Smith (R-Addison) was presented yesterday with his “Taxpayers’ Friend Award” for 2003 by The National Taxpayers Union. Smith has consistently voted to reduce federal spending, taxes, and debt while serving as a Member of the U.S. Congress. He was the only Member of the Michigan Congressional Delegation and one of only 29 of the 535 Members of the House and Senate to receive the award. |

The National Taxpayers Union announced today that Rep. Nick Smith (R-MI) has earned the “Taxpayers’ Friend Award” for 2003. The comprehensive and widely respected Rating of Congress is based on every roll call vote affecting fiscal policy in a given year, and by consistently voting to reduce federal spending, taxes, and debt, Smith earned one of the top scores this year among all Members of Congress. This is the fourth time in the past five years that Smith has earned the award. |

04/02/2004 | Smith Criticizes Governor Granholm's Death Tax Increase
Rep. Nick Smith (R-MI) criticized Governor Jennifer Granholm today for her plan to increase Michigan’s death tax. Smith, who sponsored the bill to eliminate the inheritance tax while he served as a Michigan State Senator, said, “Michigan worked for 8 years to get rid of the inheritance tax to make the state more attractive for retirees. Increasing the Michigan tax by $94 million this year and $161 million next year will make it less attractive to retire in Michigan.” |
