On Thursday, June 12 at 10:15 A.M. Chairman Nick Smith of the House Research Subcommittee on Science will hold a hearing to examine plant biotechnology research and development activities relevant to African food crops and the challenges and opportunities involved in these activities. Speaker of the House of Representatives J. Dennis Hastert is scheduled to testify and will discuss the importance of sound science in driving trade policy, as well as the promise biotechnology holds to grow the U.S. economy and to reduce hunger in sub-Saharan Africa. |

Congressman Nick Smith (MI-7) today cast a vote in favor of House Science Committee legislation that would authorize a national nanotechnology research and development program. Nanotechnology, or “science and engineering at the atomic level,” is President Bush’s highest science and technology priority in the fiscal year 2004 budget. Experts say it has the potential to revolutionize science and engineering and have a profound impact on our economy and society. The National Science Foundation (NSF) predicts a $1 trillion global market for nanotechnology in approximately twelve years, which could translate into as many as seven million new jobs. |

For approximately three days, the delegation will visit U.S. research stations on the Antarctic continent, including the U.S. Amudsen-Scott South Pole Station. Smith’s Research Subcommittee has jurisdiction over NSF, the lead agency for the U.S. Antarctic Program (USAP). |
